Bismuth iii oxide (also known as Bismuth trioxide, Dibismuth trioxide, Bismutum-oxydatum, Dioxodibismoxane, Bismuth sesquioxide, Bismuth Yellow, Bismuth(3+) oxide, and Bismuthous oxide) is a light yellow to orange solid. is a highly insoluble and thermally stable bismuth compound widely used in glass, optical, and ceramic applications. It naturally occurs as the minerals bismite but can also be obtained as a by-product during the smelting of copper and lead ores.
Among bismuth compounds, bismuth (III) oxide is the most industrially significant due to its stability and versatile properties. While oxides generally exhibit poor electrical conductivity, certain perovskite-structured oxides are electronically conductive and have specialized applications, such as in the cathodes of solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen generation systems. These compounds consist of at least one oxygen anion and one metallic cation and are typically insoluble in water, making them exceptionally stable. This stability allows their use in a wide range of applications, from basic ceramic structures to advanced electronics, lightweight structural components for aerospace, and electrochemical systems, such as fuel cells, where they show ionic conductivity.
