Basic Information

Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) is a narrow-bandgap, layered semiconductor known for its excellent thermoelectric properties and relatively high thermal conductivity. Recent advancements in research indicate that bismuth telluride holds significant potential for improving the operational speed of microchips and serving as a foundational material for the new field of spintronics, a next-generation technology focused on utilizing electron spin in addition to charge.

Crystal-pulled bismuth telluride, the most commonly utilized type, is produced through zone melting and crystal-pulling techniques. This method ensures consistency and performance uniformity within a 3% tolerance. The resulting material exhibits stable and reliable thermoelectric properties, making it a standard choice for various applications.

Hot-extruded bismuth telluride, available in both n-type and p-type forms, represents a core material offering superior performance characteristics. Manufactured using advanced nano-process sintering technology, this material shows mechanical strength that is 4–6 times greater than that of the zone-melted crystal-pulled one. Its electrical conductivity reaches approximately 1000 S/cm, with a Seebeck coefficient in the range of 210–230 µV/K. Each complete crystal rod weighs approximately 1 kg. Customized dice sizes and particle forms are also available upon request.

Applications

  • Thermoelectric Modules: consist of multiple thermoelectric elements connected electrically in series and thermally in parallel. These modules are employed in thermoelectric coolers (TECs) for refrigeration applications and in thermoelectric generators (TEGs) for converting waste heat into electricity.
  • TECs for cooling electronic devices: microprocessors, lasers, and infrared sensors. When an electric current is applied to the thermoelectric module, heat is absorbed from one side of the module and expelled from the other, providing localized cooling without the need for refrigerants or moving parts.
  • Power Generation: In TEG applications, it is used to generate electricity from waste heat sources, such as industrial processes, vehicle exhaust, or solar radiation. By harnessing temperature differentials, TEGs can produce sustainable electrical power without consuming additional fuel.
